If you can’t resist a crunchy white wine with a hint of sweetness, Riesling can be the perfect broth for you.
As a quality wine with an impeccable pedigree, Riesling possesses a number of characteristics that really distinguish it from other white wines.
In today’s guide we recommend 5 of the most affordable quality wines we have ever tasted.
Simply put, they’re the best Riesling for less than $20.
Quick knowledge of the Riesling
The Riesling’s fragrant and floral bouquet is characteristic, as is its high acidity and a fresh and crisp taste.
Think of peaches, pears and apricots in combination with the light acidity of the apples and you are on the right track.
Unlike many other wines, the Riesling varies greatly depending on the production area. They are very dry or very sweet, so it is important to pay extra attention when ordering.
If the Riesling was imported from Germany or California, it will probably be sweet. One of the most useful manufacturers is a candy ladder on the back of the bottle, but it is not yet universal.
However, you can also buy dry Riesling in Germany or California: Note the word dry or dry Riesling on the bottle. Medium dry and finely dry are two alternative names you may notice; this means that the wine is not dry.
It is important not to mix Trockenbeerenauslese with dry ones, because the latter is super sweet and not dry at all.
Rieslings from Washington, Austria, French Alsace and the Finger Lakes near New York City are generally dry. There’s nothing on the bottle, because it will probably be a dry Riesling.
Besides the different types of wine, the Riesling is a surprisingly versatile wine. Riesling can be enjoyed young or old, dry or sweet, quiet or sparkling. It is also one of the few white wines that improve with age.
Unlike red wines, white wines are generally drunk shortly after bottling, but Riesling does not meet this expectation. Riesling has been tested in the bottle after more than a century and instead of being degraded, the taste really gets better.
The smell associated with it is quite unpleasant, but sommeliers believe that it is the compounds where the smell comes from that are responsible for the high quality of the wine.
Because of its diversity Riesling goes well with a variety of dishes. The sweeter bottles are ideal to accompany a fruit dessert and add a refreshing element.
The Riesling is also the ideal partner for spicy dishes and allows a refined explosion in the air.
Our recommended cheap Riesling wines
These are amazing but affordable Riesling wines that we recommend to everyone,
1) Charles Smith Kung Fu Girl Riesling 2015
The region: Washington, DC
Alcohol content : 12%
If you look at the average score of 90 of the official wine critics, you can see that it is a very well thought out bottle.
Measured and full of citrus aromas, this Charles Smith Riesling 2015 delivers white peaches, lime leaves, honeysuckle, jasmine and larvae to create a distinctive aromatic combination. The end result is clean and refreshing, but with a characteristic crispy crust.
In the old lakes of Washington, DC, it is not a sweet wine, but it is not a lingering dry aftertaste. The acidity provides a good balance and there is the purity of this vintage that really brings it up to standard.
Although Riesling has a long shelf life from a technical point of view, experts recommend drinking all year round.
The vineyards that have produced these grapes are committed to using sustainable methods. The rows of vines planted in 1998 are on cliff tops above the Columbia River, which has a cooler effect on growing conditions.
In 2015, an early kidney fracture occurred, which turned into a long, hot summer. The conditions ripen to perfection, resulting in a low alcohol content, a slight acidity and a very round taste.
What we think: The most expensive wine on our list, but still very accessible, this wine has a nice punch. Treat yourself to special occasions instead of drinking every day.

2) Sindh Humbrecht Riesling 2015
The region: Alsace, France
Alcohol content : 12.5%
Originally from the French region of Alsace, it is not surprising that this is a dry Riesling, but a hint of residual sugar is a delicious addition.
The scents that unfold are complex and appear in layers in each opening of the mouth.
The spicy start with grapefruit tones revolves around the air from the first sip, which then develops into a full, ripe peach and pear aroma, offset by smoke and quince. This combination gives the pure citrus aromas so typical of Riesling, with the herb in the background.
The carbon dioxide bounces out of the air and produces a good spark, which is nice. The aftertaste is undoubtedly a lemon with strong fruity notes that evoke a longing for the next opening of the mouth.
The price of this Riesling is significantly higher than that of the Charles Smith Kung Fu Girl, but the quality is indicated in paragraph 93. This French white wine likes to stay at its best until 2035 – if you can miss it in the meantime.
The vines of this variety were planted on average in 1994 on a steep south-western slope.
In a low-productivity limestone vineyard, harvesting such tall vines can be a challenge. In 2015, the conditions for the development of the Riesling were surprisingly dry.
What we think: It’s one of the most expensive Rieslings, but it’s still affordable enough to have fun. Complicated, delicious and refreshing, Sindh Humbrecht costs extra dollars.
It’s recommended: The 19 Red Blend Crime wine has not only a sweet and fruity taste, but also an aromatic story! You can find out more here.
3) Winter Riesling of the Wengut Dittel heim
diversity: Dry (dry)
The region: Reinhessen, Germany
Alcohol content : 12.5%
Remarkable citrus aromas mix with the first impressions of this Riesling. Lime and lime melt together with a green apple and a hint of cooking herbs.
In the air, greater fertility develops with a strong acidity and a hint of sweetness. The finish is crispy and tart, with the unexpected appearance of spices for cooking.
This German white wine goes particularly well with fish and shellfish dishes, but also with classic cuisine. The delicate sweetness is also a good backdrop for spicy paprika dishes with white meat, such as turkey tacos.
The Reinhessen region is one of the largest wine-growing regions in Germany and the Weingut vineyards are right in the middle of it. A family vineyard on calcareous land near the village of Dittelskheim has developed from generation to generation.
For several years the winery has been a member of the prestigious German Prädikatsweingüter organisation, recognised worldwide for its quality. The limestone and clay soils, combined with the microclimate of the region, offer an incredible variety of flavours in every glass.
Harvesting until 2015 began at dawn and the fruits were spread on mushrooms for several hours to extract maximum aroma from the skins. After fermentation, the process is completed by maturing the wine in stainless steel tanks.
Since Riesling is at the bottom of the price list, it is recommended to drink it until the end of the year 2020 to get the best taste.
What we think: This is another very expensive Riesling, but the economy is not affected by its quality. Clean and crisp, with a refreshing but dry aftertaste, this white wine is a good choice.
4) Golden Riesling Eroika 2013
The region: Washington, DC
Alcohol content : 11%
The Eroica Gold Riesling 2013, with 89 to 93 points from the wine experts, is an excellent white wine at the average price.
This cellar is really special because it combines old world traditions in Germany with modern viticulture in Washington. The merger of two incredible producers into the Eroica brand is what makes this Riesling so special.
In 2013, the broken buds were early enough to break all records, allowing a constantly hot summer, the best conditions for optimal ripening of the vines.
For this harvest a trio of vineyards were used: one in the Yakima Valley, one on the Royal Slope and one at the Columbia River.
Harvesting took place between August and November and ended at night in cool conditions to obtain the best fruit. Pressing takes place immediately after harvesting, followed by gentle fermentation, slowed down by the yeasts to obtain a round, fruity taste.
Recommend it to others: But if money wasn’t the goal, what would be the best Riesling wine?
Careful harvesting and fermentation have resulted in a white wine with a pronounced fruity taste and a hint of orange marmalade. Juicy peaches and ripe pears are combined with the well-considered botritical background to give a more earthy touch.
With its fleshy fruit aromas, saffron and orange peel are used to add depth rather than relying on sweetness.
With a clean finish this Riesling goes very well with Thai cuisine and curry and with fish.
What we think: If you want to avoid a Riesling with too many desserts, but still want a complex taste at different levels, this is the best choice. The price isn’t so bad if you’re in the middle of the others on this list.
It’s recommended: The Kung Fu Riesling Girl is the perfect couple for your Asian cuisine. That’s the reason.
5) Riesling Eden Valley McGigan Selection List 2017
The region: Eden Valley, Australia
The winery has won the prestigious International Winemaker of the Year award at least four times, allowing McGuigan to enter the world stage with confidence.
They have also received many other awards, many for the Riesling they have produced over the years.
The 2017 Riesling grapes were grown on a vineyard in the Eden Valley, an area of the Barossa River in South Australia. The altitude of this place, combined with a cooler climate, contributes to the production of fruit with a rich taste.
The Riesling 2017, like other vintages grown on this site, is often described as similar to some of the best Rieslings produced in Germany. This quality is confirmed by the exceptional score of 93 awarded by wine critics.
This Riesling is straw-coloured with a green sheen and offers jasmine scents with grapefruit notes that reach out to the sky. The result is a spicy mix of lime and green apple, underpinned by slate, a classic Riesling presentation.
The finish adds more minerals and a healthy acid injection, keeping your mouth clean and lively. Serve with delicate aromas of seafood, oysters and shellfish for maximum pleasure. The quality of this Riesling makes it possible to be cellular in the medium and long term.
What we think: Another Riesling appreciated in the middle is hard to ignore, the high scores and the many awards this white wine has received.
Making your own choice
The Rieslings collection available above offers a sublime selection that is difficult to evaluate. They have all received good grades from wine critics and have proven to be white wines with real aging power.
In terms of pure economy, the Winter Dittelsheimer Riesling cannot be surpassed because it offers incredible value with a refined taste. The only drawback is that it won’t take too long, so you’ll have to drink it until the end of 2020.
However, the best cheap wine for Riesling should be McGuigan, taking all factors into account. In an award-winning winery and with a vintage that is rapidly gaining popularity, you can now drink this beauty or keep it as long as you like.
We don’t think you can last much longer, and this affordable but breathtaking accompaniment to a delicious seafood dinner.
It’s up to you! Now we’re going to make the most of the Riesling, and all we have to do is enjoy the drink!
