Since I am a wine blogger, it may not be obvious to some that I drink wine. But then I don’t look like a typical wine snob. I don’t own wine glasses, nor do I ever drink wine from a glass. I prefer wine in my hand and on my tongue.

There are two grades of Italian wine, DOC and DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita). DOC means that the wine has been made according to the rules, for example, by the use of grapes from a certain region, by a particular method of fermentation, and by a particular age. Most wines with this label are not yet well known, but they are really good. DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) is a special label that means that the wine has been made to a strictly defined quality standard and it is allowed to call itself DOC.

Andis wines are back!

Today’s offering is a highly recommended blend of traditional Amador grapes, based of course on 44% of the wonderful Barbera variety grown there, plus 20% Petite Sirah, 12% Zinfandel, 12% Grenache and 12% Malbec. (If you were lucky enough to participate in our previous deal with Andis Wines Barbera, you know what I’m talking about).

These fine grapes come from Bartman, Tanner, Andis Estate, Tumbas and Di Stasio vineyards in the Sierra Foothills AVA.

The wine ages in new French oak barrels (30%) and neutral barrels (70%) and contains almost no residual sugar (0.3 g/l). Only 1,300 examples were produced.

This vintage also won a gold medal at the SF Chronicle Wine Competition, and the MSRP is $28.

With today’s Insider offer, you can purchase 4 bottles of 2018 Andis Wines Painted Fields Amador Classico for only $67.99 ($17 per bottle) plus $5 shipping.

From the basement:

An inherited blend of traditional Amador varietals, the 2018 Painted Fields fully demonstrates the distinctive regionalism of the Sierra foothills that is essential to any world-class wine region. The acidity and freshness that come from the high-altitude plantings give the wine a deep concentration and mountainous complexity that results from the abundant sunlight and rocky granite soils.

Produced and bottled by Andis Wines
14.7% alcohol

Andis Wines Painted Fields Amador Classico 2018 opens with a very pleasant aroma of ripe black fruits and spices, but also some graphite and earth.

The tasting revealed a very good blend with excellent balance. On the palate, it has a sweetness and aromas similar to those on the nose, but on the palate it is quite rich and juicy. I love that there is so much flavor without added sugar.

This unique and delicious grape blend comes into its own after a few hours of ripening, so much so that you’ll have a hard time saving a few for the next day.

The wine is dry and long, with a slight hint of tobacco and earth on the finish. Excellent!
