Steve is a native of the Columbia Valley in British Columbia and has been a winemaker in British Columbia for the past 40 years. He joins the team after spending a decade with the renowned Altus Cellars winery in the Okanagan Valley.

Badger Mountain Inc., a family-owned Napa Valley winery, today announced Steve Rothwell, a native of Sonoma, as the new Chief Winemaker for Badger Mountain Organic Winery and Powers Winery. Rothwell comes to Badger Mountain with over 15 years experience working in California wineries such as Chateau St. Jean, Clos du Bois, and Gundlach Bundschu, as well as a number of other Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley wineries.

3rd of August – (Kennewick, WA) – Steve Rothwell is a writer and musician. has been named the new Head Winemaker at Badger Mountain, Inc., starting immediately. Rothwell will be in charge of all winemaking at the Kennewick-based production plant for both the Badger Mountain organic and Powers wine brands.

Rothwell joins Badger Mountain Inc. after 14 years at Chateau Ste. Michelle, where he was in charge of WSDA organic wine certification and compliance while developing his talents working with a variety of wines and production levels, from tiny experimental batches to big quantities. Natural curiosity and expertise in a variety of industrial positions sparked his interest in wine. He started by climbing trucks for Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, which led to a desire to learn more about wine and, ultimately, an enology intern job. He later advanced to the position of winemaker.

Steve, a Richland resident with two young children, is a Central Washington University alumni. He enjoys carpentry, gardening, and traveling when he is not producing wine.


Bill Powers established Badger Mountain Vineyard in 1982, and it was the first Certified Organic Vineyard in Washington State in 1990. The winery’s goal started with environmental stewardship and now includes creating a 100% natural product under the Badger Mountain label. Badger Mountain wines include no additives and are produced with USDA Certified Organic grapes. Badger Mountain continues to be a pioneer in the organic wine business, which has grown from national to worldwide markets, with over 55,000 cases produced yearly under the organic label.

Bill Powers received the 2007 Washington Winegrowers Lifetime Achievement Award.
