1. Oddero Barbera d’Alba Super 2018

Main product characteristics

Of course, the country of the court itself is the obvious starting point. Italian Barbera is exactly what we need, like a fresh and juicy wine.

This house comes from Oddero, a historical and traditional house of the Barolo family. And after more than 300 years, still one of the best. Robert Parker, Jr. Wine Advisor, has scored 92 points for his 2018 Barbera d’Alba superhero.

With soft tannins on the palate and good acidity, this is a classic Barbera that goes well with the classic lasagne al forno dish. However, this balance makes it versatile to combine with many others.

What we like about Oddero Barbera d’Alba Superior 2018

From the first sip, you will be seduced by its richness and softness. An abundance of red and dark berries and fruit, with just the right amount of peppery spice, smoky resin and mineral freshness. The delicate balance of tannins and acidity that we mentioned above, but that they treat well again here.

It must be served at room temperature at all times until the end of the year 2025.

What we don’t like about Oddero Barbera d’Alba Super 2018

We really wanted to love him, but he lacked depth and was a little more bitter than we expected.

2. Marchesi di Barolo Ruvei Barbera d’Alba 2017

Main product characteristics

Made in part with the Nebbiolo grape variety, its aroma and acid-tannin structure are even more appealing than those of the Barolo grape variety alone. No wonder it is one of the most popular red wines in Italy.

It’s quite rich and filling with lasagna, it’s well balanced and perfectly blended. The oak is just right and the acidity is low enough to complement the aromas and flavors.

What we like about Marchesi di Barolo Ruvei Barbera d’Alba 2017

It is again a Barbera of a beautiful ruby red with purple accents. The scents are fruity with red fruits and blackcurrant jam. The freshness comes from the creamy vanilla and toasted hazelnut.

What we don’t like about Marchesi di Barolo Ruvei Barbera d’Alba 2017

It’s not as full-bodied as our first Barber’s Selection, and we haven’t yet found the balance between tannins and acidity. Both can be used with plenty of time to spare.

  • Dry, earthy and soft
  • Stand in the middle of the table and let everyone help themselves.

3. Cavallotto Vigna Vigna Scotch Dolcetto d’Alba 2018

Main product characteristics

Our newest Italian red wine is Dolcetto Piemonte. Ready to drink now, but with the promise of 5 more years of aging potential.

Dense and creamy, but not too woody for lasagna. It was only placed in large Slavic oak barrels for 6 months and then another 6 months in cement barrels.

  • Variety: Dolcetto, Italian red wine
  • Title : Vigna Scott, Piedmont
  • The wine: Cavallotto
  • Alcohol: 12.5%
  • Bottle size: 750 ml

What we like about Cavallotto Vigna Scott Dolcetto d’Alba 2018

Medium-bodied and sweet, with a recognizable nose of dolcetta cherries and other black fruits.

Complexity and sufficient intensity come from the underlying transparent minerals of the earth for a very fine balance.

What we don’t like about Cavallotto Vigna Scott Dolcetto d’Alba 2018

Not yet emphasized enough, this is another example that will save time.

PROS

  • Very sweet, but sincere.
  • The long finish turns into a pleasant aftertaste.

SUMMARY

  • Alcohol is (very slightly) rude.

4. Stéphane Aviron Côte de Brouillet Vielle Vigneux Crus du Beaujolais 2017

Main product characteristics

This is Gamay, an often underrated grape, but another ripe, juicy and fresh red grape. Especially the vines, which are more than half a century old and are considered the best of the Beaujolais villages. This is due to the favorable southwestern terroir, consisting of clay and limestone.

This wine is characterized by its elegance, finesse and roundness. Aromas of cherry, raspberry and peony lead to a very good concentration of rich red and black fruits, with hints of spice. It has a soft, juicy texture of melting tannins and ripe acidity.

We love sustainable viticulture, very old vines and classic Burgundian wine making techniques.

What we don’t like about Stéphane Aviron Côte de Brouillet Vieille Vigneux Crus du Beaujolais 2017

In 2017, we also had Stephan Aviron’s best Beaujolais Gamei. But unfortunately they are not available.

5. Reata Sonoma Coast Rose 2018

Main product characteristics

Moving away from reds, rosé can also provide good acidity to counteract the richness of lasagna.

The excellent growing conditions for pinot noir in Sonoma County resulted in an especially good harvest in 2018. The result is this delicious Reata Rosé, a light and refreshing acidity. This makes it suitable for both vegetarian versions and classic meat lasagna.

What we like about the 2018 Reata Sonoma Coast Rose

Open a bottle of this elegant Pinot Noir Rose and it will transform. We were first struck by the floral aromas coming from the glass. Sweet aromas of red cherries and strawberries follow, with additional notes of grapefruit, guava and pineapple.

But it’s not just about fruit. It is a dry rose with a slightly chalky texture, with the right balance of tannins and acidity.

What we don’t like about Reata Sonoma Coast Rose 2018

As always, it’s personal preference, but it can be a little dry and bitter for some tastes.

6. Chardonnay Felsina and Sistri Berardenga 2017

Main product characteristics

It is also growing rapidly in Italy, particularly in Tuscany, where this chardonnay is being classified as Indicazione Geografica Typica Toscana, or typical geographical representation of the region. The 28,000 bottles produced may seem like a lot, but this wine sells quickly because the price is better than any other vine.

The wine goes well with vegetarian lasagna, depending of course on the garnish. But all variations with cream, ricotta or mushrooms instead of tomato sauce require white, which has a certain weight, as well as oak. Felsina and Sistri Berardenga’s 2017 Chardonnay is very appropriate.

What we like about Felsin and Sistri Berardenga Chardonnay 2017

The pale straw yellow color features tropical fruits and peach with hints of roasted herbs and vanilla on the nose. On the palate, apricot, peach, lemon and vanilla are beautifully complemented by accents of caramel, custard and oak bark.

It is full and creamy. Elegant white in color, the fine tannins are well balanced in acidity to support the freshness of these flavors.

What we don’t like about Felsin and Sistri Berardenga Chardonnay 2017

Even the creamy appearance can’t quite soften the slightly rough edges.
