In a recent acquisition, Burgess Cellars has announced the purchase of a historic building that will soon become a winery. The purchase marks the next exciting chapter in a story that began in the early 1900s.

At Burgess Cellars, we are excited to announce the creation of our newest tasting room, located on the Estate grounds in the beautiful Sonoma Valley. The new space will serve as a valuable addition to the Burgess experience, along with the new winery store and vineyard store, and will provide a premium experience for our visitors.

When owner and winemaker Steve Burgess purchased the winery in 2005 it was a run-down, worn-out, dry, and dusty old place. It was a place of great shame and regret for Steve, the winery, and the people who worked there. It seemed as though the winery had lost all its power and charm, and that it was time to move on. Unfortunately, over the years since then, this place has slipped into obscurity and disrepair, until he came along and took it over, and did what he could to bring it back to life again. He hired great people, and they worked hard to make the vineyard and winery the wonderful places they are today.. Read more about winery in california and let us know what you think.

Georgy Lobzhanidze, a veteran of the hotel industry, has been named director of Historic Properties.

Napa Valley, CA (June 1, 2021) – Burgess Cellars announces the purchase of a new vineyard after losing the original Howell Mountain Vineyard in the Glass Valley fire last year. Andrews Winery, formerly owned by Clos du Val and renamed Luna Vineyards, will become the new winery of Burgess Cellars. The new winery was built in the style of a Provençal farmhouse and is headed by George Lobzhanidze, the new director of the winery. After the long-awaited renovation and purchase of the new space, it should officially open to the public in July.

St. John’s Winery, St. John’s St. John’s, St. John’s St. John’s, St. John’s St. John’s, St. John’s St. John’s. Founded in 1980, Andrews Winery is known for its elegant Cabernets with old world structure. Mr. Lobzhanidze and winemaker Megan Zobek transform the site into an oasis of undifferentiated cultivation, a multicultural method that dates back to Roman times. By combining regenerative agriculture with food and livestock production, Lobzhanidze and Zobeka hope to start a conversation about the natural ecosystem of agriculture and the importance of the vitality of the land. The team at Burgess Cellars will immediately begin applying biodynamic farming methods.

In addition to announcing the new winery, Burgess Cellars is pleased to welcome the winery’s manager, George Lobzhanidze. He has already made his mark on the winery by dedicating himself to hospitality and a holistic view of agriculture. Since the Lawrence family and master sommelier Carlton McCoy Jr. took over Burgess Cellars in the summer of 2020, this is the first new addition to Howell Mountain Manor since the appointment of winemaker Megan Zobek.

We are delighted to welcome a leader who understands the great wines of the world so well and who oozes true hospitality, said Carlton McCoy, Jr. managing partner of Lawrence Wine Estates. Under George’s leadership and with Megan’s passion for winemaking and responsible farming in mind, a new era is dawning for Burgess Cellars, marked by a return to the providence of the land to create expressive and vibrant wines.

In her new role at Burgess Cellars, Lobzhanidze is responsible for developing the private tasting program, managing the team in a consistent manner, and interacting directly with customers in the tasting room, e-commerce and events, while maintaining the highest quality of service.

Even before I became a sommelier, I had an undying love for Napa wines, and I learned to appreciate the nuances and history of each bottle, especially the classic Napa wines of the 1960s and 1970s. Burgess is a unique estate that should be preserved for future generations. I look forward to tasting the expression of this place through the agricultural and viticultural lens of winemaker Megan Zobek, Lobzhanidze said.

Mr. Lobzhanidze was born in the Republic of Georgia and has a long family history in the wine business. After immigrating to the United States, he and his family settled in Atlanta, Georgia, where he attended Georgia State University. While at GSU, he worked as a sommelier and bartender at Eugene’s Restaurant, which fueled his passion for hospitality and fine wine.

After graduation, he accepted a job as assistant sommelier at Bacchus Management Group’s Spruce restaurant in San Francisco, where he honed his skills and learned how to run a Michelin-starred restaurant and a Wine Spectator Grand Award. After Spruce, he became sommelier at the Village Pub and then opened Selby’s Restaurant in Atherton. While working for Bacchus Management, George became a partner in Vine & Rare, a brokerage firm for vintage and rare wines, where he developed a penchant for evaluating classic wines of the world.

Lawrence and McCoy are the new owners of this renowned 27-acre vineyard and, along with renowned winemaker Megan Zobek, will continue their tradition of producing quality wines from organically grown fruit. It should be noted that Mr. Zobek was previously employed by Screaming Eagle Vineyards and Cellar.  Zobek was also an assistant winemaker at Philipp Melk.  She has also worked under the direction of Michel Roland and Fabrizio Iuli in four regions: Bordeaux, Chile, South Australia and Piedmont.

Aspect Consumer Partners acted as the exclusive financial advisor of the seller in this transaction.
