The Ram’s Gate Winery, an affiliate of the Carneros appellation, has made a significant investment in its Enologist Training Program. Enology, the art of wine making, is a multi-faceted, scientific field. It requires a deep knowledge of the vineyard, the grapes, the winemaking and the winery operations. The Vineyard Manager, Matt Stiles, said that Rachel Bordes’s passion for wine and her track record as a viticulturist made her the ideal candidate for this position.

(Sonoma, California; July 27, 2021) — Rachel Bordes has been promoted from cellar technician to enologist at Ram’s Gate Winery, according to Joe Nielsen, Director of Winemaking. Bordes will manage all wine production in the lab, cellar, and vineyards, working closely with Nielsen and Assistant Winemaker Orrin Oles in her new position.
“Rachel immediately proved to be a superstar when she joined us for harvest as an Intern in July 2020,” Nielsen adds. “Her efforts to the winery are highly appreciated. Her dedication, positive attitude, and vast wine expertise make her an invaluable part of the Ram’s Gate winemaking team.”
Bordes’ scientific background, which includes a bachelor’s degree in wine and viticulture from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, prepares her for the intensive lab work that her new position would entail. Bordes will spend the bulk of her time in the vineyard and the lab monitoring the sugar and acid levels of the grapes in order to identify the best time to select the 2021 vintage. Bordes started as a harvest intern at Ram’s Gate in 2020 and soon rose through the ranks to cellar technician.
Bordes’ family relocated from New Orleans to Sausalito, California, in 2012, where she attended high school. During this period, her parents purchased a 27-acre vineyard in the Sonoma Coast AVA and sold fruit to a number of prestigious wineries in the area. Bordes fell in love with winemaking while working on this project and decided to pursue a degree in viticulture and enology at Cal Poly in 2016. Bordes completed her senior research thesis on the impact of shade cloth on the sensory aspect of wine after completing a harvest internship at Tolosa Winery in 2019. She graduated in 2020.
“The continuous learning experience and development is what drew me to winemaking and enology,” adds Bordes. “There’s something very gratifying about making something with my hands that I’ll eventually share with others.”
Bordes is likely to be seen jogging, bicycling, swimming, and hiking in Sonoma when she is not in the cellar.
