The Consorzio di Tutela Vini Sicilia DOC (Consortium for the Protection of Wines of Sicily DOC) announced today that it has hired the public relations firm Grace & Co. to handle its U.S. public relations needs for the Wines of Sicily DOC.
Incumbent agency Current Global and Colangelo & Partners were selected as agencies for the strategic implementation.
New York, NY, 26. April 2021 – Sicilia DOC, one of Italy’s largest and most prestigious wine awards, has announced the launch of the Wine of Sicily DOC integrated communications program for the United States in 2021. For the strategic implementation of the program, Sicilia DOC has retained the current agency, Current Global, and added Colangelo & Partners as its agency of record.
DOC’s Wine of Sicily program will continue to attract open-minded millennial wine and food lovers and will focus more on wine industry influencers in 2021 with a combination of commercial and mainstream events spread across the two agencies. Current Global partnered in 2015 to lead integrated, consumer-facing media relations, including earned media, social media, influencer engagement, paid media, e-commerce and strategic partnerships, while Colangelo & Partners handles commercial media relations, press tours and virtual events for the wine trade.
We began investing in the United States in 2015 and have steadily increased our investments since then. The United States is the main export market for Sicilian wines with high potential, said Antonio Rallo, president of the Consorzio di Tutela Vini Sicilia DOC. The United States is the largest importer of Italian wines in the world and continues to grow despite the pandemic. Our grape growers are reducing yields per acre and focusing more and more on the unique characteristics of each of our wine sub-regions, Rallo said. We produce wines of very high quality with a great expression of freshness, structure, elegance and flavor. So it’s time to accelerate the promotion of these great wines to American wine lovers.
In 2021 Sicilia DOC will target two different but complementary audiences: wine-loving consumers and wine merchants. The campaign will tell the story of the high quality and typical character of Sicilian wines, which are sustainable in nature. Sicily produces modern wines that are based on an ancient culture, are versatile and can go hand in hand with a variety of international cuisines. Whether drinking together or chatting virtually, wine lovers appreciate the qualities of Sicilian wines. concluded Mr. Rallo: We are confident that Current Global and Colangelo & Partners will form an excellent team, each focused on their own areas of expertise, to help Sicilia DOC achieve its goals.
Sicily is an island in the Mediterranean Sea with a famous history of more than 3,000 years of winegrowing. Today, the same reputation for world-class winemaking stands at the forefront of the new Sicily. Sicilian winemakers boast more than 70 local grape varieties and a rich diversity of soil types, and are leaders in Italy in sustainable and organic viticulture. Sicily is the largest organic wine growing area in Italy, accounting for 34% of the total Italian organic wine growing area. The region is also a crossroads between Europe, Africa and the Middle East. It is a truly original melting pot and a gateway to influential flavors. Each bottle of Sicilia DOC wine offers an all-encompassing experience that with each glass evokes a rich tapestry of culture and nature.
The awareness and popularity of Sicilian wines continues to grow – it’s great to know that since the launch of the Wine of Sicily DOC marketing campaign in the US, bottling volumes have increased from 25 million in 2016 to 90 million by 2020, said Virginia Devlin, CEO of Current Global. Much of this demand comes from North America, where people who have discovered the affordable, accessible and unique wines of Sicily are more likely to enjoy them and talk about this unique region with family and friends.
We are excited to represent the great wines of Sicily in the U.S. wine trade and honored to be part of this campaign with Current Global, said Gino Colangelo, president of Colangelo & Partners. We look forward to creating a collaborative platform with wine retailers that will increase the consumption of Sicilian wines in the United States and Canada in the coming years.

About Sicily DOC
The Consorzio di Tutela Vini DOC Sicilia, recognised by the Italian Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry, aims to strengthen the identity of Sicilian wines while improving their quality, image and market position. The DOC Sicilia appellation, introduced in November 2011, has a lower maximum yield per hectare than the previous IGT rules. The goal of the winegrowers is therefore to improve the quality of the wine, despite the yield. One of the main objectives of the Consortium is the dissemination of the name and the DOC brand in Italy and in the rest of the world. For more information, visit the Wine of Sicily website.
