New York, NY (March 31, 2021) – Crus Bourgeois du Médoc, the prestigious and historic Bordeaux family of chateaux and classifications, announced today that it has appointed award-winning public relations firm Magrino PR as its agency of record to lead media relations and category strategy for the U.S. market.

The Crus Bourgeois du Médoc are a wine family with medieval roots that, in 2020, counts 249 châteaux spread over seven appellations on the left bank: Médoc, Haut-Médoc, Listrac-Médoc, Moulis-en-Médoc, Margaux, Poluc and Saint-Estèphe. The Crus Bourgeois, which account for 31% of Médoc production, aim to produce high-quality wines that are adapted to the terroir and affordable. The production is exclusively dedicated to red wines, mainly based on Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Crus Bourgeois classification was created to classify wines outside of the Crus Classés system in order to offer consumers a guarantee of quality and authenticity. Previously published annually, Cruz Bourgeois revised the rankings in February 2020 to be published every five years. This change was made to give consumers confidence in their purchases by providing producers with a longer-term view of their wine’s classification to better enable projects and investments to improve quality. From 2018 through 2022, the five-year grading process will be conducted by a fully independent and impartial review panel.

The association is very pleased to promote the new five-year classification worldwide, after years of work to bring this new system to life, says Armel Cruz, vice president of Crus Bourgeois du Médoc and fourth-generation co-owner of Château du Taillan. For the locks that Cruz Bourgeois is rebuilding, the five-year format will be critical to achieving individual goals and serving the future of the class.

The classification is divided into three quality levels: Cru Bourgeois, Cru Bourgeois Supérieur and Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel. Such a hierarchy creates clear objectives for the grape growers and also gives the consumer a better idea of the expected quality level. The criteria for the classification include the quality of the wine, regular checks on tastings and environmentally friendly viticulture. Two additional criteria are taken into account for Crus Bourgeois Supérieur and Crus Bourgeois Exceptionnel: Management, marketing and promotion of wine. The 2020 classification includes 179 Châteaux Crus Bourgeois, 56 Châteaux Crus Bourgeois Supérieur and 14 Châteaux Crus Bourgeois Exceptionnel.

Those looking to buy a Crus Bourgeois du Médoc should look for the term Cru Bourgeois du Médoc on the bottle – it is usually present as a verification sticker or written on the front label.
