Napa Valley, CA (February 17, 2021) – Famous Napa Valley vineyards, Dalla Valle Vineyards, and Ornellaia in Tuscany have joined forces to create DVO, a Cabernet Sauvignon-based red wine with a slight addition of Cabernet Franc that builds on both estates’ passion for precision, expression and uncompromising quality. The first vintage of this limited edition bottling, the 2018 DVO, comes out at 1. October 2021 on the market.
The DVO concept was designed by second-generation Maia winemakers and founder and owner Naoko Dalla Valle, as well as winemaker Axel Heinz and Ornellaia’s CEO Giovanni Geddes da Filicaia. These two parallel generations have come together to highlight their heritage and experience of exceptional vineyards in a Mediterranean climate and to outline the future of these emblematic estates.
With DVO, we take the essence of our two great wineries and create a unique wine that is distinctive and authentic to the vineyards it comes from, explains Maia Dalla Valle, who oversees DVO’s daily operations. Axel and I, and by extension my mother and Giovanni, want to broaden our common understanding of Bordeaux grape varieties. We want to create a wine that balances the expressiveness of Napa’s fruit through the lens of European restraint.
The friendship between the two farmers began in earnest in 2013, when Maya met Axel during a harvesting internship at Ornella after earning a master’s degree from Cornell University. After joining Bordeaux Sciences Agro, Maya stayed in close contact with Axel, whose mentor she was during her doctoral studies. Back in California, Maya and Naoko received Giovanni Geddes de Filicach for dinner; there, the idea of working together was born, linked to the fundamental value of the two territories, first agriculture and then the connection to Italy by the late Gustav Dalla Valle, Naoko’s husband and Maya’s father.
DVO combines the terroir of Napa Valley with Italian inspiration. I have always had a passion for this rich terroir, and it is a great pleasure for me to finally have the opportunity to make wine here, says Axel Heinz.
The desire for restraint led the two teams to cooler areas of the Napa Valley, namely the hills and vineyards of the southern part of the valley : The locations of Coombsville, Mount Veeder and Oakville offer the refined character they want to show in this wine. Axel comes to the Napa Valley a few times a year to visit the vineyards and talk to the Mayans about farming. They stay in regular contact, especially during harvest and vinification.
The name DVO was originally conceived as an easy and quick way to publicize the project. However, both views agree that this is an ideal title: DVO is a simple but honest expression of the philosophy of the vineyard in a bottle. Moreover, DVO, written in ancient Latin script on the wine label, is reminiscent of the word Duo.
