The festivities start at 11:00 a.m. on June 8th, with a tour of the Far Niente Winery, led by Far Niente’s president, John Williams, who will be sharing stories and knowledge about the winery’s history and the people who have made it what it is today. Forty years ago Far Niente crafted its first Chardonnay from their vineyard in the heart of Napa Valley, an endeavor that would go on to put them on the map as one of the most well-respected producers of Chardonnays in the world. Four decades later, the winery has built a legacy at the top of the list of the best Chardonnays in the Napa Valley thanks to its commitment to handcrafting wines with an incredible level of care and attention to detail.

Oakville, CA, 4. May 2021. – Far Niente, a renowned Napa Valley producer, is proud to announce the 40th anniversary edition of its iconic Chardonnay grape. The 2019 vintage is a significant milestone for this landmark estate and embodies Far Niente’s vision to create unique, estate-grown, cellar-worthy examples of Napa Valley Chardonnay.

From the beginning, we wanted to make one of the best Chardonnays in the world, a timeless, drinkable wine, says Dirk Hampson, president of Far Niente and a former winemaker who made these wines in the 1980s and 1990s. The concept was to further refine the Chardonnay with each vintage and create a harmonious wine that had everything to please while remaining true to our core values.

Far Niente produced its first Chardonnay from the 1979 vintage, sixty years after Oakville’s original stone winery closed due to Prohibition. It was the first Far Niente wine in the modern era and set the standard for luxury Chardonnay in the Napa Valley. From the beginning, the winery has focused on a single Chardonnay from its own vineyards, made without malolactic fermentation, to create a house style that balances grace, elegance, depth and length.

It is an honor to produce Far Niente Chardonnay and be part of such a historic winery, says Nicole Marchesi, Far Niente’s winemaker. She is only the fourth winemaker in Far Niente’s long history, since joining the winery as an oenologist in 2005. We take the best of what each harvest has to offer to achieve the beautiful structure and distinctive style that characterizes our Napa Valley Chardonnay. From the variety of clones planted in our vineyards to the many methods used in the winery, our unwavering commitment to excellence has allowed us to create an aged Chardonnay that is rich, refreshing and nuanced.

Far Niente Chardonnay is made from grapes grown in the vineyards of Coombsville Winery, a temperate climate region in the foothills of the Waka Mountains just east of Napa. Well-drained, gravelly, clay and volcanic soils and a long growing season are combined with Far Niente’s winemaking expertise to create an exceptional Chardonnay that ages beautifully.

To celebrate 40 years of Chardonnay, Far Niente hosts events throughout the year, from special tastings at their beautiful vineyard in Oakville to a Happy Hour at the home of hostess Beth Nickel. The wines are available at retailers and restaurants nationwide, as well as directly to consumers through the winery’s website.

About the Far Niente family of wineries and vineyards

Far Niente Winery was established in Oakville, California in 1885 and thrived until the beginning of reclamation in 1919, when the winery ceased operations and the estate was abandoned. Sixty years later, in 1979, the old stone winery underwent a three-year renovation that restored the building to its original 19th-century grandeur. The century has returned the favor. During the restoration, the name Far Niente, which romantically translated means carefree, was found engraved in the stone on the building’s facade.

Far Niente helped create the market for top wines in Napa Valley and has been the benchmark for winemaking for more than three decades. Dolce, the only North American winery to specialize in a single late-harvest Napa Valley botrytized wine, was launched in 1989. Founded in 1997, Nickel & Nickel specializes in producing 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from a single vineyard in Napa Valley. EnRoute was founded in 2007 in the Russian River Valley and specializes in Pinot Noir from the region. Bella Union, a Napa Valley Cabernet company located on Bella Oaks Lane in Rutherford, has unveiled its first wine of the 2012 vintage. Recently, Post & Beam released their classic 2020 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay wines. Together these wineries form the Far Niente family of vineyards and wineries.
