2. March 2021 – Sixty years ago, the Pinot Grigio made its debut in Santa Margherita: a new, elegant and modern wine that revolutionized the taste and pleasure of drinking wine. In the first sixty years of its history, the Pinot Grigio became the first Italian white wine in the world, and Santa Margherita’s Pinot Grigio is still its flagship: a wine that has greatly contributed to the development of Italian viticulture and revolutionized the domestic and foreign markets. Every day, thousands of bottles of Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio are warmed around the world: a great success Made in Italy with roots that go back a century.

It all started at the end of the 1950s, when Count Gaetano Marzotto, a visionary and avant-garde who anticipated future trends, was looking for a new type of wine that no longer fit the cliché : Wines that can be distinguished by their originality and a unique aromatic profile with a strong varietal and territorial identity. At the same time, it was necessary to promote a different approach to wine and become a true hero of modern gastronomy. His search for the ideal combination of terroir and grape variety led Earl and his team of winemakers to Trentino-Alto Adige, an ideal growing region for grapes with the potential to produce wines with the fresh, fruity character he wanted to capture. It was the expertise of his oenologists that made it possible to identify a variety capable of fully expressing the pedoclimatic characteristics of the region, but the real revolution was represented by the Count’s brilliant and revolutionary thinking: the vinification of the delicate Pinot Grigio grapes into a white wine, removing all contact between the must and the skins, transforming a copper-coloured wine into a brilliant, elegant and tasty white wine that was unique.

In 1961, the Pinot Grigio of Santa Margherita made its debut on the Italian market. Its popularity with the public was as surprising as it was immediate. While Italians had previously been used to distinguishing between white, red and rosé wines, they immediately appreciated the unusually drinkable style and taste of this vintage, which is characterized by a new way of interpreting not only the Pinot Grigio grape variety, but white wine in general. Pinot Grigio Santa Margherita has revolutionized the way wine is consumed: from a foodstuff to a source of pleasure. This process has contributed to the democratization of wine, allowing new consumers – such as women – access to the product and attracting a segment of the population that will play an increasingly important role in purchasing decisions in the coming decades. The Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio was the first original and innovative wine to capture the hearts of consumers, projecting an image of future and innovation.

Its astonishing success suggests that it would also have excellent potential abroad, where it was diligently exported from the 1970s onwards: Pinot Grigio Santa Margherita has proven to the world that Italy can offer sexy wines that perfectly match the evolution of different societies and modern tastes.

The year 1979 was a turning point: With its crowning as Italy’s best white wine in a blind tasting, the doors to the huge American market are opening. In just a few years it has firmly established itself there, become an icon among wines and created unprecedented brand loyalty. What has seduced wine lovers is its freshness, its easy taste and its exceptional ability to go well with food.

In the United States, the Pinot Grigio Santa Margherita is still the most imported and valued Italian white wine, even among celebrities : In fact, it’s not uncommon for celebrities like Rihanna or Kylie Jenner, Jon Bon Jovi or Drake to appreciate her, and even dedicate some rhymes to her in the lyrics of their most famous songs.

The Pinot Grigio Santa Margherita has rightly won a place in the winery and is now presented in a resolutely modern and versatile style: straw yellow colour, pure and rich nose, with unexpected floral notes and hints of citrus and white fruit; freshness and effervescence in perfect balance, which on the palate give way to a fruit that is both delicate and stimulating.

Thanks to its harmony, Pinot Grigio Santa Margherita proves to be a wine of great character, very versatile with food or in different situations: as an aperitif, at brunch, drunk during meals and especially with many dishes of the Italian culinary tradition, fish-based or not.

Pinot Grigio Santa Margherita is a dream come true, thanks in particular to the best practices applied both in the vineyard and in the winery, such as the preservation of biodiversity, reforestation and self-sufficiency in renewable energy, based on the belief that everything that comes from a healthy environment – grown sustainably and in moderation, respecting natural cycles – has a special value.

Particular attention has been paid to local suppliers, so that today more than 90% of the bottles are produced in a glass factory close to the winery, and to the carbon neutrality program, which has reduced the carbon footprint of the nearly 2 million bottles of Pinot Grigio produced each year to zero over the past seven years.

The combination of craftsmanship, tradition and technical and oenological innovation has allowed Santa Margherita to fully exploit the relationship between the grape variety and its terroir, offering an excellent Pinot Grigio that finds its place on the tables of over 90 countries around the world. A wine that has reinvented the way we approach wine, that has always moved with the times, and that even in this year when we celebrate its first sixty-year success, is already showing new ways to taste and appreciate wine for the future.
