It all started at the end of the 1950s, when Count Gaetano Marzotto, a visionary and avant-garde who anticipated future trends, was looking for a new type of wine that no longer fit the cliché : Wines that can be distinguished by their originality and a unique aromatic profile with a strong varietal and territorial identity. At the same time, it was necessary to promote a different approach to wine and become a true hero of modern gastronomy. His search for the ideal combination of terroir and grape variety led Earl and his team of winemakers to Trentino-Alto Adige, an ideal growing region for grapes with the potential to produce wines with the fresh, fruity character he wanted to capture. It was the expertise of his oenologists that made it possible to identify a variety capable of fully expressing the pedoclimatic characteristics of the region, but the real revolution was represented by the Count’s brilliant and revolutionary thinking: the vinification of the delicate Pinot Grigio grapes into a white wine, removing all contact between the must and the skins, transforming a copper-coloured wine into a brilliant, elegant and tasty white wine that was unique.
In 1961, the Pinot Grigio of Santa Margherita made its debut on the Italian market. Its popularity with the public was as surprising as it was immediate. While Italians had previously been used to distinguishing between white, red and rosé wines, they immediately appreciated the unusually drinkable style and taste of this vintage, which is characterized by a new way of interpreting not only the Pinot Grigio grape variety, but white wine in general. Pinot Grigio Santa Margherita has revolutionized the way wine is consumed: from a foodstuff to a source of pleasure. This process has contributed to the democratization of wine, allowing new consumers – such as women – access to the product and attracting a segment of the population that will play an increasingly important role in purchasing decisions in the coming decades. The year 1979 was a turning point: With its crowning as Italy’s best white wine in a blind tasting, the doors to the huge American market are opening. In just a few years it has firmly established itself there, become an icon among wines and created unprecedented brand loyalty. What has seduced wine lovers is its freshness, its easy taste and its exceptional ability to go well with food.
In the United States, the Pinot Grigio Santa Margherita is still the most imported and valued Italian white wine, even among celebrities : In fact, it’s not uncommon for celebrities like Rihanna or Kylie Jenner, Jon Bon Jovi or Drake to appreciate her, and even dedicate some rhymes to her in the lyrics of their most famous songs.
