Benchmark Far Niente, a Napa Valley winery with a strong focus on Italian varietals, has recently announced the acquisition of significant acreage in Carneros, which is known as “California’s Napa Valley,” from the Clos Du Val Private Vineyard. The vineyard, which is located on the eastern side of Carneros, is about 80% planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, which is a classic varietal of the Carneros region. This vineyard was purchased by Benchmark Far Niente from the Clos Du Val Private Vineyard.

Earlier this year, Napa Valley Benchmark Far Niente announced that they would be significantly expanding the vineyard acreage under their Far Niente brand. The wines that Far Niente produces are widely distributed and the Napa Valley Benchmark Far Niente wines have earned a number of awards over the years. They recently reached a milestone in their expansion when they acquired a new contiguous block of approximately 40 acres near the Spring Mountain District.

In November of last year, Napa Valley Benchmark Far Niente acquired a substantial vineyard in Carneros, California, which is the heart of the Russian River Valley. The vineyard has been in the family of Benchmark’s long time friends for seven generations, and was chosen because its topography and climate are similar to Benchmark’s Carneros’ vineyards, where Benchmark has been successfully growing quality grapes for decades.. Far-Niente-Family-of-Wineries-Vineyards-Announces-Promotions-in-Winemaking-andOakville, CA, July 21, 2021 – Renowned Napa Valley winery Far Niente today announces its acquisition of a 133-acre vineyard in the Carneros AVA of Napa Valley. Formerly known as the Gran Val vineyard, 60 acres are currently under vine and preparations are underway to plant an additional 73 acres in spring 2022. The vineyard will produce grapes to complement Far Niente’s iconic Napa Valley Chardonnay and provide fruit for its sister wineries including Nickel & Nickel, Bella Union and Post & Beam. The purchase reinforces the winery’s strategic vision of producing world class wines from top estate vineyards in the Napa Valley.

Far Niente’s Chief Executive Officer Steve Spadarotto said, “This remarkable vineyard supports our long-term commitment to producing some of the finest wines in the Napa Valley from truly exceptional estate vineyards that we nurture through sustainable practices, tried and true farming techniques, and more than four decades of experience.”

The vineyard, which was formerly a cow ranch, was created in 1980 amid the rolling hills on the eastern side of Carneros, southwest of Napa. Chardonnay and Merlot are presently grown on the property. The vineyard is ready for further Chardonnay plantings, with the rockiest and hottest part of the property suitable for growing Bordeaux types. The additional vineyard will enable the winery to continue to set the standard in California for quality and elegance.

Far Niente’s Director of Vineyard Operations, John McCarthy, said, “We are committed to producing the finest quality grapes possible and this vineyard will make a great complement to our current estate program.” Under the supervision of Andrew Delos, Vice President of Winemaking, John, who joined the winery in 2021, will oversee the vineyard. “With this purchase, we will have complete control over all elements of the farming process, allowing us to create wines with the depth, length, elegance, and complexity that we are renowned for,” Andrew added.

One of the cornerstones to Far Niente’s concept of outstanding winemaking is vineyard ownership. Far Niente was founded in 1885, and its contemporary era started in 1979, when it released the first vintage of its famous Napa Valley Chardonnay, which is now celebrating its 40th anniversary with the 2019 vintage release.

Far Niente was founded in Oakville, California in 1885 and flourished until Prohibition began in 1919, when the winery closed and the land was abandoned. In 1979, the ancient stone shell of a winery underwent a three-year restoration, restoring it to its former 19th century magnificence. During renovation, the word “Far Niente,” which means “without a care” in Italian, was discovered inscribed in stone on the building’s façade.

Far Niente helped create the high-end Napa Valley wine market and has served as the benchmark wine estate for more than three decades. Dolce, the only North American winery devoted to a single late-harvest, botrytized Napa Valley wine was introduced in 1989. Nickel & Nickel, launched in 1997, is focused on producing single-vineyard, 100 percent varietal Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. EnRoute, established in 2007 in the Russian River Valley, is dedicated to the appellation’s Pinot Noir. Bella Union, devoted to Napa Valley Cabernet and located along Bella Oaks Lane in Rutherford, introduced its first wine with the 2012 vintage. Most recently, Post & Beam launched in 2020 with classic expressions of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Together, the wineries comprise the Far Niente Family of Wineries & Vineyards.
