The area presently has about 30 vineyards and wineries, totaling 1,000 acres of land. The Spring Mountain District appellation became a recognized AVA in 1993, with a distinct character forged over 150 years. Oak, madrone, Douglas fir, redwood, tan oak, and conifers are among the many mixed hardwood woods found in the area. The AVA is renowned for its steeply sloping vineyard parcels, which range from 200 to 2,250 feet in elevation and have slopes of up to 30%.
The Spring Mountain District AVA is accessed mainly through Spring Mountain Road, which is about a 15-minute drive from St. Helena.
