A few weeks ago TTB approved the Burn of Columbia Valley AVA in Washington State, a new wine-growing appellation that will be the first of it’s kind in the United States. The Columbia Valley in Washington’s Okanagan Valley was originally a dairy ranch, but now it has been planted with vineyards, with Riesling being the most popular variety.

In April 2017, the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board (LCB) approved the first wine appellation in the state of Washington, the Burn of Columbia Valley AVA (also known as the Columbia Valley AVA). The Burn of Columbia Valley AVA is located in Columbia Valley, a wine-growing region in the Yakima Valley. The LCB approved this appellation on the basis of the results of a comprehensive study of the region, which concluded that the region was suitable for grape growing and vinification.

Last week, the members of the TTB voted to approve the Burn of Columbia Valley AVA. I know that a blog is not the place to discuss the details of this decision, but I wanted to call it to the readers attention because I think it’s a decision that deserves a little attention. Burn is located in the southwest corner of the Columbia Valley, between the Columbia Gorge and Horse Heaven Hills AVAs on the Columbia River. The petition for a new AGM was started in 2017 by Kevin Corliss, vice president of vineyards at Ste. Michelle Wine Estates; Joan R. Davenport, professor of soil science at Washington State University; and John Derrick, vice president of vineyards at Mercer Ranches, Inc. The AVA Burn takes its name from legends of early settlers who burned the land in the fall to replenish and rejuvenate pasture for their horses in the spring. Not only is there a legend behind the name The Burn, but also a historical record, says Kevin Corliss. In the early 20th century, for example, mail was routed from the SP&S station in Sandale, Washington, to this area, called Burn. In addition, the area is still designated as Burn on the U.S. Geological Survey online map. The AVA is bounded by natural geographic features – Rock Creek to the northwest, Chapman Creek to the northeast, and the Columbia River to the south. The area has only recently been used for viticulture: The first hectares were planted in 2002. Ste. Of the total 16,870 hectares, 1,261 hectares are currently planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Syrah, Chardonnay and Sangiovese grapes.
