When we purchased the Wheeler Farms property, our goal was to have a fully equipped, state-of-the-art crush facility with the most advanced technology that would allow the brands using it to achieve the purest expression of their wines, says Bart Araujo, co-owner of Wheeler Farms. The 100 points recently awarded to these brands by Galloni and Dunnuck are proof that this goal has been achieved.

The excellence we achieve as winemakers is largely determined by the quality of the fruit we work with. This is testament to the internal potential of the vineyard and the caliber of the operation, but a world-class winery can introduce progressive differences that truly elevate the wine, says Nigel Kinsman, winemaker at Accendo Cellars and his personal brand, Kinsman Eades. If you can do the work as if you had your own business – bringing in the fruit when you decide it’s ready, pressing it, managing the fermentation, pressing and bottling when and how you want – that means fewer compromises. Add to that the fact that Wheeler’s state-of-the-art winery is among the absolute elite of Napa wineries in terms of operation, and it’s a winemaker’s dream come true.

Wheeler Farms’ two-story winery is home not only to quality winemakers, but also to the J.H. winemaking team itself. Wheeler, the ability to produce wine using state-of-the-art technology, including a computer-controlled, self-contained stainless steel tank system, as well as a crushing plant with an optical sorting machine, a de-stemming machine and a purpose-built floor-mounted receiving bin.

The 2018 J.H. Wheeler Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper Cabernet Sauvignon, which just received 97 points from Galloni for its inaugural vintage, is a rarity and shows the potential of quality fruit combined with quality winemaking, Kinsman said.

At Wheeler Farms’ winery, winemakers can control fermentation at will. You can control temperatures and pumps accurately and easily, freeing up valuable time and resources that can be spent on wine decisions. Underground, the wines are aged in barrel-type cellars, which provide controlled humidity and temperature and ideal conditions for the maturation of the wine.

In addition to its state-of-the-art winery, Wheeler Farms is a diverse expression of Napa Valley’s rich agricultural history. Dedicated to the legacy of collective farms established in the 1800s, the owners have redeveloped the estate with more than seven acres of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc, an orchard, olive trees, edible orchards, chickens and bees to reconnect with the estate’s agricultural and viticultural roots.

Wheeler Farms Hospitality House offers tastings by appointment from a number of its wine partners, including Accendo Cellars, Kinsman Eades, TOR Wines, Vice Versa and J.H.’s own wines. Wheeler Wines.
