Aventura, Florida, 1. February 2021: Castello del Poggio, the most popular brand of the past five years and the one that will see the strongest growth in 2020, is undergoing major packaging changes as the Zonin-owned Piedmont is preparing to reach the one million pack mark in the United States in 2021. U.S. consumers can expect the new wines packaged starting this month, with releases set to last through April (see attached photos of the bottles).

Consumption for 2020 is up 30 percent from last year, reports Sean Balzano, national sales manager of 1821 Fine Wine & Spirits, the Zonin family’s U.S. import division. The Castello del Poggio line includes Moscato, Moscato d’Asti DOCG, which is very popular with Italians, the new Pinot Grigio delle Venezie DOC, Prosecco Extra Dry, Rosé and two red blends : Smooth red and Templar red.

The new packaging clearly and directly addresses the growing diversity of Castello del Poggio’s Millenium and Z generation consumers, explains Mike Wolff, Director of Consumer Marketing and Trade for Fine Wines and Spirits, 1821. Tasting notes in English and Spanish. The back of the label says the contents are gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan. An easy-to-read scale for smoothness/dryness has also been added.

Two sentences get a new name: The old Castello del Poggio Sweet Rosé is now the Castello del Poggio Rosé. The sweet red Provincia di Pavia becomes the Smooth Red – the latter is a great success in the United States, with volume growth of 50% last year.

Mailings and merchandising materials now use QR codes for seasonal content updates to keep the brand current.

The front of the label shows subtly drawn flowers indicating the main aroma of the wine in question : Orange blossom for Moscato IGT, honeysuckle and orange blossom for Moscato DOCG, French broom for Pinot Grigio DOC, jasmine for Prosecco, peach blossom for Rosé, wild rose for Smooth Red and red peony for Templar Red DOC. The floral theme continues in the illustrated corks of the top-end university bottles, with the exception of the prestigious 2020 DOCG Moscato d’Asti and DOC Prosecco, which remain sealed with the classic cork.

The new Castello del Poggio website is also under construction and should be online in the spring.
